Daliburgh school's nursery children enjoyed learning to make hot chocolate. South Uist pupils who 'road-tested' a children's cookery book prior to publication last year had the chance to cook again under the watchful eye of its author. Scotland's leading children's food campaigner, Fi Bird, selected Daliburgh School pupils to put the recipes in her Kids' Kitchen collection through their paces, and returned to the school recently to teach them more culinary skills and tips.
Mrs Bird, mother of six children aged 12 to 24, created Kids Kitchen, a deck of laminated recipe cards designed to inspire children to cook, and to educate them about the food they're eating.
Mrs Bird told The Stornoway Gazette: "I felt that schools in the Outer Hebrides don't always get the same opportunity as mainland schools in terms of home economics initiatives. We've been holidaying in South Uist for years, and have always loved coming here so I wanted to give the children a chance to get involved in my project.
She added: "Since last time I've found out that the older children have remembered exactly what they cooked for during the testing, and continue to make the dishes at home. I've also been very impressed with their knowledge of healthy eating."
