School pupils from Northumberland are relishing the rewards of a major healthy eating drive. Cambo First School has become the first in Northumberland to receive the School of the Month award from the School Food Trust.
The honour, which comes with a £5,000 prize to spend on its kitchen, aims to recognise commitment to educating children about healthy eating and promoting school meals.
Headteacher Paula Cummings told The Morpeth Herald: "I am delighted that the school has received this award.
"We firmly believe that every child should learn to cook at an early age. By doing this we can encourage healthy attitudes, healthy minds and healthy bodies."
Initiatives at the school have included inviting two members of the community into school to cook for two hours with pupils every week for the past five years, with the emphasis on healthy eating and the use of fresh local ingredients. Children take turns to participate in the programme.
In addition, cooking is included in the curriculum and classes have included making bread, while regular community events are held, such as a community soup day where the school makes food for visitors.
Northumberland County Council Executive Member for Children's Services Lesley Rickerby welcomed the award.
She said: "This is tremendous news for all the staff who work at and support Cambo First School. It is well deserved for all their hard work in promoting healthy eating."
